Every business has unique power requirements and faces its own power challenges, but most of these challenges can be solved while decreasing costs by using a combination of commercial rooftop solar panels and high-quality energy storage systems. Here are four ways going solar will save your business money, from the solar cell specialists.
1. Earning solar feed-in credits: The amount of credits your business can earn are dependent on the size of your solar cell system and the deal you negotiate with the local electricity retailer and the policy in place for your state. This system allows you to sell the excess solar energy in c/kWh that your commercial rooftop solar system collects back into the grid, earning you a profit in credits, which can also be traded to other businesses. Currently, the value of these credits is between 7 cents and 20 cents per kWh.
2. Independence from the grid: Full or even partial independence from the grid can make a massive difference in your company’s running costs, especially since electricity prices in Australia have more than doubled over the last 10 years. The higher your organisation is charged as a total rate for electricity, the more you’ll save by going solar. Most businesses draw the majority of their load during the daylight hours, when solar cells are producing at optimal levels, so you can still draw from the grid at night when the solar cells are inactive and save considerably – you won’t even need an energy storage system. There are no negative tax implications either, as offsetting is a cost-saving measure, not a revenue stream.
3. Minimal downtime: Most businesses are crippled without electricity and downtime from the grid can lose you customers and productivity, while electricity surges as power returns can damage computers and equipment. By running your organisation independent of the grid with combined solar cells and energy storage, you can operate regardless of power outages.
4. Reduction in demand charges: If your business is affected by demand charges, commercial rooftop solar systems can help reduce demand. This can be better calculated if you combine your solar cells with an energy storage system to ensure your business has access to solar energy on cloudy days or through the night.
There are also state and federal programs designed to make commercial rooftop solar a more affordable investment, from Environmental Upgrade Agreements (EUAs) and solar energy rebates to Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs).
