Backup generators are very useful equipment for homes, businesses, and industrial sites, providing clean, reliable power when the grid isn’t available. However, they’re not always in use, so it’s important that they’re stored correctly until they’re needed again to ensure that they stay in perfect working condition. Here’s some advice from our team who hire generators and sell diesel generators for commercial, residential, marine and industrial use.
Short-term storage for diesel generators
If you know that you’ll likely require your generator throughout the next few months but that it may sit idle for a week or so in between use, then storage is a relatively simple thing. Simply clean any dust or debris off the unit after use and store it somewhere with easy access where it is protected from the environment. Keep in mind that diesel starts to deteriorate after about 10 days, so if you leave it for more than 3 weeks or so, your backup generator can start to experience corrosion and clogging in fuel lines.
Long-term storage for diesel generators
If your backup generator won’t be needed for the next few months, then the storage process is a bit more intensive.
Step One – Do scheduled maintenance. Backup generators should be serviced once a year or according to the guidelines set by the manufacturer. This downtime is the perfect opportunity to get this important preventative maintenance done to ensure that everything is in perfect working condition the next time you need it. This is usually fairly affordable maintenance that includes oil changes, filter replacements and so forth - but without it, diesel generators can wear down, causing expensive repairs and a breakdown of the unit.
Step Two – Drain the fuel. Diesel deteriorates over time and causes corrosion, so the system has to be cleared out completely. One alternative to this messy job is to treat the fuel with a quality stabiliser. This process involves filling your backup generator to capacity with diesel, and then adding a manufacturer-recommended fuel stabiliser. Once this is done, run the generator for about 10 minutes to ensure the stabiliser is distributed throughout the system. This should keep your fuel at a good quality level for 8 months to a year.
Step Three – Clean and store. Clean the backup generator of any grease, dust and debris as these can cause corrosion and compromise performance. Store the generator somewhere secure, dry and out of the way, protected from the weather.
