As we look for
new, sustainable ways
to harvest energy
attention is turning
towards marine power,
sometimes referred to as
ocean energy, wave
power, ocean power, and hydrokinetic energy.
With oceans covering more than 70%of
the surface of
our planet, it
seems only logical
and natural to
look at power generation
from this water
source. Oceans have
a tremendous amount
of energy and
are close to many,
if not the
most concentrated populations
(approximately 44%of the
global population live
within 150 kilometers
of the coastline)
and this has
led to companies
looking at developing a new generation of marine engine designs which
can tap into
this vital energy
source.
The movement
of water in
the world’s oceans
creates a vast
store of kinetic
energy. With the
correct design of
marine engine technology,
this energy can be efficiently
and effectively harnessed
to provide a good
source of power
generation which can
provide electricity to power homes, industries, and transport. Marine
power or ocean
energy is a
renewable energy source
which has the
potential to provide
a substantial amount
of energy around
the world. In
theory, oceans could
power the entire
globe without adding
any pollution to the atmosphere
and could prove
to be a more a dependable source at power generation than wind or sun.
The most reliable
type of marine
power to capture
is to harvest energy
from the tides,
since tides are
more predictable and
regular than energy from the wind or sun. Kilometers
of coastline can
therefore be used
to exploit tidal
energy. The larger
the tidal influence,
the greater the
water movement, which
in turn means
there is more
potential energy which
can be harvested
for power generation.
Although the potential
environmental impacts are
still under review,
the latest marine
engine technology has been designed to be less intrusive.
There
is little doubt
that marine power
will inevitably grow
in the future.
The fact it is
a new, sustainable
and renewable energy
force makes it an attractive alternative to other forms of energy sources. The
oceans energy can
be replenished by
the sun as
well as through
tidal influences of
the moon and
suns gravitational forces.
Energy experts are
already talking about seeing a
day when the
sea will deliver
a significant amount of
carbon-free power to
coastal cities around
the world. They
have seen that
marine engine technology
has already shown
electricity can be
made from moving seawater, and
that’s a huge step forward.
