Put Safety First When You Hire Generators

CAT generators are a useful and reliable source of power for businesses and projects across a wide range of industries – but it’s critical that the right measures are put in place to ensure that they operate safely. When you hire generators for your business from CAT rental specialists, be sure to adhere to these guidelines and safety protocols.

Need to hire a generator? Get the right size
Before we go into general safety guidelines, the first and most important piece of advice is to ensure that you hire generators that offer the right capacity for the job at hand. Generators that are smaller may be more affordable, but overloading generators can easily result in power outages and damaged equipment.

When running CAT generators:

  • Ensure that the CAT rental generator is situated outdoors as the exhaust fumes are hazardous to your health. Even with windows open and fans moving the air, the exhaust fumes will quickly build up.

  • In order to ensure that no carbon monoxide leaking into your office space, ensure that a working battery-powered alarm is inside each room.

  • Water should never come into contact with the generator, so your hands should be kept dry and the generator should be properly sheltered from the elements. If it’s raining or wet and windy, rather avoid using the generator unless it is fully weather-proofed and designed to handle it.

  • Always plug the appliances you intend to use directly into the generator or through a heavy-duty extension cord. Check that your extension cord is suitable for outdoor use if needed, and that it is in good condition. Avoid using extension cords that are cut, torn or otherwise damaged, or where the plug is damaged or missing a prong or prongs. Never modify your extension cords to create a new connection.

  • Do not try to supply power to your office or property by plugging the generator into a wall socket outlet. This is known as backfeeding, a dangerous practice that can easily result in electrocution, putting people in your building as well as neighbouring buildings served by the same utility transformer at serious risk.

  • Always keep fuel safely in sealed regulation containers and store them away from fire hazards such as other fuel-burning equipment or appliances. When refuelling your generator, switch it off first and let it cool down to reduce risks of fuel ignition.

  • Fire is always a risk when using a generator, so be prepared. Never smoke or bring an open flame near a generator. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand in case of emergencies and make sure that everyone on-site knows how to use it.

Tips for Storing Your Backup Generator

Backup generators  are very useful equipment for homes, businesses, and industrial sites, providing clean, reliable power when the grid isn’t available. However, they’re not always in use, so it’s important that they’re stored correctly until they’re needed again to ensure that they stay in perfect working condition.  Here’s some advice from our team who  hire generators  and sell  diesel generators  for commercial, residential, marine and industrial use.   Short-term storage for diesel generators   If you know that you’ll likely require your generator throughout the next few months but that it may sit idle for a week or so in between use, then storage is a relatively simple thing. Simply clean any dust or debris off the unit after use and store it somewhere with easy access where it is protected from the environment. Keep in mind that diesel starts to deteriorate after about 10 days, so if you leave it for more than 3 weeks ...
