Essentially, a prime power generator is able to run for a considerable length of time at maximum or near-maximum loads, as long as they have enough fuel to do so. In prime power diesel generators, the continuous combustion process in the engine means it generates a lot of heat in the process of creating electrical power. This means that these generators require large cooling systems, usually consisting of a radiator and a series of pipes that circulate cool water around the genset.

They’ll run all electrical equipment on-site, from ventilation and cooling or heating systems to computers, pumps, and other industrial equipment. • Base loading: This is the opposite of peak shaving. Instead of running your generator to supply additional power to meet the shortfall of the utility company, you’d run your generator at a fixed output. If your load exceeds this, then you utilise additional power from the grid to make up the shortfall in electrical power.
